Fractal
Nawras Altaky & Young Jazz Society - 2025
Recording by Fieke van den Hurk
Mixing by Chris Weeda
I recorded the Young Jazz Society and Nawras Altaky playing all together on the same day, in the gorgeous hall of Wisseloord Studio 1.
The project Fractal is a collaboration between Syrian singer and Oud-player Nawras Altaky and Young Jazz Society. Together they hope to create a bridge between bigbandjazz and Arabian harmony. Nawras is a rising star in the Dutch music landscape. His compositions combine both traditional Arabic folkmusic and modern jazz. There is an equal amount of space for is een rijzende ster in het Nederlandse muzieklandschap. Zijn stukken houden midden tussen traditionele Arabische volksmuziek en moderne jazz, with just as much room for narrative melodies as for improvisation and polyrhythms. In doing so, he not only uses scales and harmonic systems that are unusual in Western music, but also quarter tones and microtonality: harmonic approaches that are new to many musicians, and therefore all the more interesting to work with.
The Young Jazz Society is led by conductor Tyn Wijbenga.
