Listen to a (Dutch) talk between Miriam and me, about the making of the album here on Spotify.

Originally from Germany, singer-songwriter Miriam Moczko now lives in Arnhem. Miriam has done one of the most brave things possible in this world: she wrote an album entirely about losing her daughter Frida, who unexpectedly passed a way only a day after she was born. You can read Miriam’s words about that here.

The album, named Frida, contains songs not only about the deep melancholy of grief, but also the anger, dreams, new perspectives on the preciousness of things, the re-discovery of joy, the deep connection to loved-ones and to Friday herself. It is a celebration of Frida and despite her short life on earth with Miriam and her partner Peet, the incredible gift she is to them… and via the music - hopefully to anyone that is in need of hearing it.

Miriam and I put attention to every detail - making the recording process part of the story. We did this by choosing sounds that carry the emotions, or help make them lighter. By having the instruments being played by friends, who were intimately part of what happened. By recording in locations that were places of meaning to Miriam, places of comfort: like her living room, the little studio she wrote most of the songs in, and also a little glass house close to Frida’s grave among the trees.

We made a recording of the ambience, the sounds in the air at Frida’s resting place, both during the day and in the darkness of the night. This recording plays continuous throughout the entire album, during the music and the pauses in between. If you listen closely you might hear…
